Two questions land in our inbox all the time: "Is VPN legal in India?" and "Which VPN should I buy?" Let's answer both properly.
Is VPN legal in India?
Yes, using a VPN is legal in India. In April 2022 CERT-In issued cybersecurity directions requiring VPN providers operating in India to keep customer records (names, contact details, IP addresses) for five years. Several large VPN companies responded by removing their physical servers from India rather than keep those logs. For you as a user, nothing became illegal โ but using a VPN to commit a crime is still a crime, of course.
Free VPN vs paid VPN
Running a VPN costs money (servers, bandwidth). Free VPNs pay for it somehow โ ads, data limits, slow speeds, or in the worst cases selling your browsing data. For occasional use, a reputable free tier is OK. For daily use, banking on public Wi-Fi or work, pay for a trusted one.

A VPN hides your connection; trackers still follow you through cookies and fingerprints. These tools tackle that:

- A clear no-logs policy (ideally independently audited)
- Kill switch (blocks internet if the VPN drops)
- Enough simultaneous devices for your family

Frequently asked questions
Is VPN banned in India?
No. VPNs are legal to use in India. CERT-In rules place logging obligations on VPN providers, not a ban on users.
Which VPN is best for public Wi-Fi?
Any reputable paid VPN with a kill switch โ for example Avast SecureLine, Bitdefender Premium VPN or HMA Pro.
Does a VPN slow down internet?
A little, because traffic takes a longer route. Good VPNs keep the slowdown small; choosing a nearby server helps.
