Project, Visio, Access & Outlook: 2019 vs 2021 vs 2024 Guide

Not everyone needs the whole Office suite. Project managers need Project, engineers and IT teams need Visio, and plenty of businesses still run on an Access database built in 2009. These apps are sold separately — here's how to pick the right version.

Microsoft Project Professional — planning and scheduling

Gantt charts, resource allocation, critical path, baselines. Used by construction firms, event planners, software teams and anyone studying PMP. Project Professional adds team collaboration and resource management over Project Standard.

• Project 2024 — newest, supported to October 2029
• Project 2021 — supported to 13 October 2026; great value
• Project 2019 — support ended October 2025; fine for offline/student use

Microsoft Visio Professional — diagrams and flowcharts

Network diagrams, floor plans, process flows, org charts, electrical schematics. Visio Professional includes far more templates and shapes than the Standard edition, plus data linking. Google searches for "Visio alternatives" are common, but if your clients send .vsdx files, nothing opens them as faithfully as Visio.

Microsoft Access 2021 — databases

Access powers thousands of small inventory systems, school records and billing tools in India. If your business software is built on Access, you need Access installed (or the free runtime, which only runs databases and can't edit them).

Outlook 2021 — just email

Need the Outlook desktop app for your business email (Hostinger, Zoho, Google Workspace, Exchange) but already have Word and Excel? Buy Outlook on its own:

Do Project and Visio work with any Office version?

Mostly yes, but they install best alongside an Office of the same generation and type (for example Project 2021 with Office 2021). Mixing a click-to-run 2021 app with an old MSI-based Office 2013 can conflict — tell us what you have and we'll advise before you buy.
