Visual Studio is the IDE behind most .NET, C# and C++ development. Microsoft gives away a free edition, so why do companies pay for Professional and Enterprise? Mostly because of the licence rules — and a few features.
Who can use the free Community edition?
Visual Studio Community is free for individual developers, open-source projects, classroom learning and academic research. In a company, up to 5 users can use it only if the organisation is not an "enterprise" — Microsoft defines enterprise as more than 250 PCs/users or more than US$1 million in annual revenue. Above that, developers need Professional or Enterprise.
Professional vs Enterprise
- Professional: the full IDE for commercial teams — everything you need to build, debug and ship apps.
- Enterprise: adds advanced testing and diagnostics — IntelliTrace, Live Unit Testing, code coverage, architecture validation, snapshot debugging. Worth it for large codebases and QA-heavy teams.
Visual Studio 2019 or 2022?
VS 2022 is 64-bit (handles big solutions without running out of memory), supports .NET 8/9 and is actively updated. Choose VS 2019 only to maintain an older project pinned to its toolchain — it's in extended support until April 2029.

Visual Studio's installer asks you to choose "workloads" — install only what you need to save 20–40 GB of disk space:
- ASP.NET and web development — web apps and APIs with C#/.NET
- .NET desktop development — WinForms/WPF apps (very common for billing and business software in India)
- Desktop development with C++ — games, drivers, performance-critical code
- .NET Multi-platform App UI (MAUI) — Android/iOS/Windows apps from one codebase
- Data storage and processing — SQL Server tooling
You can add more workloads later from the Visual Studio Installer.
Recommended PC for Visual Studio
16 GB RAM (8 GB is the bare minimum), an SSD with 50+ GB free and a quad-core CPU. Large solutions and Android emulators appreciate 32 GB.
How to activate a Visual Studio product key
Open Visual Studio → File → Account Settings → License with a Product Key → enter the key → Apply. You don't need to reinstall.
