Microsoft sells Windows in more flavours than most people realise, and the names don't help. "Pro N", "S mode", "Pro for Workstations"... If you're about to buy a key, here's what each edition really is and who it's meant for. Short version: 90% of people need Home or Pro. The rest is for specific situations.

Windows Home — enough for most people
If you game, study, attend online classes, do Excel and browse, Home has everything. It's also what comes pre-installed on most laptops sold in India. Don't let anyone upsell you to Pro "for speed" — Pro is not faster.
{product:windows-11-home} {product:windows-10-home}Windows Pro — when it's actually worth it
Pro earns its price if any of these apply to you:
- BitLocker: encrypts your drive so a stolen laptop doesn't leak client files. CAs, lawyers and anyone carrying customer data should have this.
- Remote Desktop: connect to your office PC from home with Windows' built-in tool.
- Hyper-V: run virtual machines for testing software.
- Office networks: joining a company domain / Azure AD and Group Policy controls.
Already on Home? You don't have to reinstall. An upgrade key unlocks Pro features in place — just enter it under Settings → Activation → Change product key:
{product:windows-10-home-to-pro-upgrade}Windows 10/11 Pro N — what does the "N" mean?
"N" editions were created for Europe after a competition ruling — they're identical to Pro but ship without Windows Media Player and some media codecs. You can add them back free through Settings → Apps → Optional features → "Media Feature Pack". Choose N only if you specifically need it.
{product:windows-10-11-pro-n}Windows Education
Made for schools and universities, with features close to Enterprise. If you're running a computer lab, coaching institute or college department, Education gives you the management and security tools without corporate pricing.
{product:windows-10-education}Windows Enterprise
Enterprise adds security and control that IT teams use to manage hundreds of PCs: Credential Guard, AppLocker, advanced Defender features and the option of long-term servicing. For a single home PC it's overkill, but some developers and IT professionals like it for testing and for the extra control.
{product:windows-11-enterprise} {product:windows-10-enterprise}Windows Pro for Workstations
For serious hardware — dual Xeon/Threadripper machines, huge RAM, 3D rendering, scientific computing. It supports up to 4 CPUs and 6 TB of memory and the ReFS file system for large data. If you're not sure you need it, you don't.
{product:windows-10-workstation}Windows S mode
S mode only runs apps from the Microsoft Store — great for a child's PC or a kiosk, frustrating for anyone who needs Chrome extensions, Tally or regular .exe software. You can switch out of S mode for free (one-way) from the Microsoft Store.
{product:windows-10-s}Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Windows 10 support ended in October 2025, so for a PC you'll keep for years, go with Windows 11 if your hardware supports it. See Windows 10 end of support: what to do.
