Using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 in 2026: Is It Still Safe?

Updated 1 October 2026 · by Swastik Enterprises

It surprises people, but we still sell Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 keys every week. Not to gamers — to factories, clinics, labs and shops. A ₹15 lakh embroidery machine or an old diagnostic device often only talks to software written for Windows 7, and replacing the machine isn't an option. If that's you, this guide is for you.

First, the facts

  • Windows 7 support ended on 14 January 2020.
  • Windows 8.1 support ended on 10 January 2023.

Neither gets security updates any more, and modern browsers like Chrome no longer support them. So the honest advice is: use them only where you must, ideally on a PC that doesn't browse the internet.

Good reasons to still run Windows 7 or 8.1

  • Machine controllers: CNC, embroidery, printing presses, lab instruments
  • Old accounting or billing software that won't install on Windows 10/11
  • Legacy hardware drivers (old scanners, dongles, plotters)
  • Virtual machines for testing old software
  • Retro gaming setups

How to run an old Windows as safely as possible

  1. Keep it offline or behind a firewall; don't use it for email, browsing or banking.
  2. Use a separate modern PC for anything internet-related.
  3. Transfer files with a scanned pen drive, not random downloads.
  4. Better still, run it as a virtual machine inside Windows 11 using VMware Workstation or Hyper-V, so the old system is sandboxed.
  5. Keep an image backup — old hardware fails and reinstalling legacy software is painful.

Which one to choose

Windows 7 Professional covers most business software and supports domain join and Remote Desktop.

Windows 7 Ultimate adds BitLocker and multi-language packs — useful if you need encryption or a non-English interface.

Windows 8.1 Pro is newer, boots faster on SSDs and has better driver support for 2013–2016 hardware.

If your software runs on anything newer, please don't stay old just out of habit — moving to Windows 11 is cheaper than a ransomware incident.

Frequently asked questions

Can Windows 7 still be activated in 2026?

Yes, Windows 7 and 8.1 keys can still be activated. If online activation fails, the built-in phone activation option in the activation wizard works.

Can I upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 11 directly?

Not in place. You'd need a clean install of Windows 11, and your PC must meet Windows 11 hardware requirements.

Where do I download Windows 7 now?

Microsoft has removed most Windows 7 downloads. We include download guidance with your order and help you over WhatsApp.
