A virtual machine lets you run another operating system inside a window — test software safely, run an old Windows 7 program, learn Linux, or run Windows apps on a Mac. Here's which tool to use in 2026.
On a Windows PC
VMware Workstation Pro
The most polished option on Windows: excellent 3D graphics in VMs, snapshots, cloning, easy networking and great Linux guest support. Good news — Broadcom made VMware Workstation Pro free for personal and commercial use in late 2024, so you can download the latest version from Broadcom's support portal without a key. An older licence key is only useful if you specifically need a licensed version 17 build for an existing setup.

Built into Windows 10/11 Pro (not Home). Fast and free, ideal for Windows VMs and server labs, but clunkier for desktop Linux and graphics. Need Hyper-V? Make sure you're on Pro — editions explained.

Free and open source. Fine for basic use, though slower and less polished than VMware.
How much RAM do you need for virtual machines?
A VM borrows RAM and CPU from your PC while it runs. Practical numbers:
- Windows 11 VM: give it 4–8 GB RAM and 2–4 CPU cores
- Linux desktop VM: 2–4 GB RAM
- Windows 7 VM for old software: 2 GB RAM is enough
So 16 GB RAM in your PC is comfortable for one VM; 32 GB if you run two or more at once. Store VMs on an SSD — on a hard disk they feel painfully slow.
Turn on virtualisation in BIOS
If VMware or Hyper-V says "virtualisation is disabled", restart into BIOS/UEFI and enable Intel VT-x (sometimes "Intel Virtualization Technology") or AMD-V / SVM Mode. Most Indian laptops ship with it switched off.
On a Mac — Parallels Desktop
Parallels is the easiest way to run Windows 11 on a Mac, including Apple Silicon (M1–M4) Macs using Windows on ARM. Windows apps appear right next to Mac apps. For accountants who need Tally on a MacBook, it's a lifesaver.

Frequently asked questions
Is VMware Workstation Pro free now?
Yes. Since November 2024 Broadcom offers Workstation Pro free for personal, educational and commercial use.
Can I run Hyper-V on Windows 11 Home?
Not officially. Hyper-V requires Windows 10/11 Pro, Enterprise or Education.
Do I need a Windows key for a virtual machine?
Yes. Each Windows installation, physical or virtual, needs its own licence.
