Whether you just bought a new laptop, a second-hand PC, or a Windows key, the first thing to confirm is simple: is this Windows really activated? Here are three ways to check, from easiest to most detailed.
Method 1: Settings (easiest)
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System โ Activation (on Windows 10: Update & Security โ Activation).
- Look at the line next to Activation state. You want Active.
It will also say whether it's "activated with a digital licence" or "with a product key", and whether the licence is linked to your Microsoft account.
Method 2: Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt (search "cmd") and type:
slmgr /xprshows whether activation is permanent. "The machine is permanently activated" is what you want.slmgr /dlishows the edition, licence channel (Retail, OEM or Volume) and the last five characters of the key.slmgr /dlvshows full details, including the activation expiry for volume licences.
What each result means
| You see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows is activated | All good | Nothing |
| Not activated, 0xC004F050 | Wrong key for this edition | Match edition and key (Home vs Pro) |
| Activation expires on a date | Volume/evaluation licence | Enter a proper licence key |
| "Activate Windows" watermark | No valid licence | Enter your product key in Settings โ Activation |

Buying a used PC? Check before you pay
Ask the seller to show the Activation page. If it says "Windows is not activated", you'll need a licence anyway. Budget for one:
Windows 11 Proโน225.00Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a digital licence and a product key?
A digital licence is stored with your hardware or Microsoft account, so Windows reactivates itself after a reinstall. A product key is the 25-character code you type in.
Can Windows work without activation?
Yes, but with a watermark, restricted personalisation settings, and no guarantee of future feature updates.
Does reinstalling Windows remove activation?
Usually not. If it was activated before on the same PC, it reactivates automatically when connected to the internet.
