A new laptop feels great for exactly one day. Then you realise it's full of trial software and half the things you need aren't installed. Here's the order we suggest to our customers, so the PC is safe, legal and ready to work.
1. Check Windows is activated
Open Settings โ System โ Activation. If it isn't active (common on assembled PCs), get a key now. See how to check activation.
Windows 11 Homeโน189.002. Run Windows Update and drivers
Install all updates, then get graphics and Wi-Fi drivers from the laptop maker's site. Driver tools can help on assembled PCs:
IObit Driver Booster 13 Professional โ 1 PC, 1 Yearโน550.003. Office
Most laptops ship with only a trial. Pick a one-time licence instead of paying every year:
Office 2021 Professional Plusโน399.004. Antivirus
Windows Defender is a decent baseline. If family members use the PC or you do banking and UPI on it, add a full suite:
Norton 360 Deluxe โ 3 Devices, 1 Yearโน899.005. PDF editor, zip tool and downloader
Wondershare PDFelement Pro โ 1 Yearโน2,499.006. VPN for public Wi-Fi
Avast SecureLine VPN โ 1 Device, 1 Yearโน729.007. Backup and housekeeping
- Turn on File History or copy documents to Google Drive / OneDrive.
- Create a Windows restore point once everything works.
- Remove bloatware (trial antivirus, unused manufacturer apps).
- Check the disk's health from time to time:
